Iowa State University Gym & Beyer Hall

Project Description

The new facility is an expansion to the historic State Gymnasium. This sports recreation facility houses a cardio and weight training room, recreational pool, two indoor jogging tracks, five basketball courts, a climbing wall and several multi-purpose rooms for specialty training.

State Gym became one of four recreation facilities in the country to become LEED certified. To achieve the platinum certification, which is the highest LEED recognizes, the renovations had to focus on reusing existing materials whenever possible and adding energy saving materials when necessary. 80- 90% of the original structure was reused, including the old wooden gym floor. The LEED certification is more than just an award, it shows a commitment to sustainable design. The renovation also saved money, as the reused materials operate more efficiently.
